no ceiling paper wall: time & space

(2018) a4/ a5 zine publication ・collective collaboration

No Ceiling Paper Wall: Time and Space is the first published issue from the collective No Ceiling 〇 Wall. Within this issue, the collective explores how alternative spaces of exhibiting can manifest in 2-dimensional planes such as the pages of a book. The collective held an open call and curated works from contributors in ways befitting the characteristics of publication. i.e using photographs as page numbers or elements from flip book animation. Complementary to this exhibition, the collective also published a sub-publication that contains essays, articles and photographs  that serves to analyse and breakdown the current conceptions of the white cube and re-imagine future possible forms of alternative exhibition spaces.

No Ceiling 〇 Wall’s Manifesto

“This collective questions the way artists and creatives choose to represent their works in spaces in Singapore. Perhaps due to rigid urban planning and a need to facilitate over ongoing artworks, many exhibitions are mostly presented in a White Cube format. From the Singapore Art Museum, to DECK, to Gillman Barracks , the constant between these spaces are their white walls. Although one might argue that many exhibitions have turned to alternate spaces thus bringing a diverse representation of works, these spaces have also, unfortunately, becomes sanctioned with a social purpose of it being art-related. As a collective, we want to tear through these white ceilings and punch holes through these white walls. We want to question how else works can be presented and digested to an audience wider than the art-educated community. Through our activities as a collective, we wish to store an awareness of the infinite possibilities of what an exhibition can possibly be. We hope to push for a more experimental scene in Singapore. To put in simply, we’d like to explore what an alternative alternative space could be. “

No Ceiling 〇 Wall
