SILK CANVAS TWINS

An experimental journey on material exploration kick-started my interest in surface-making using silk fibres. Before the invention of using plant fibres to make paper, silk was used as a valuable resource for paper-making in ancient China. Animal fibres are usually better vessels for vibrant colours compared to their plant-based counterparts due to the natural oils and proteins found in them. Intrigued by the unique characteristics of animal-based fibres in paper-making, I decided to create organic and free-flowing canvases that would be complimentary, if not as captivating as the stitches and drawing marks that they are imprinted with.

CLOUD HUNTING

Created for a group exhibition with an underlining theme, “Obsessed with the Everyday”, this piece is littered with small embroidered depictions of daily scenarios, such as a crushed can laying along side a traffic cone. Or of a man riding a horse etc. The work’s title is derived from the process of making it, which is through identifying abstract silhouettes and forms endowed by the natural flow of fibres and placement of colours. Embroidering along these shapes and forms, thus bestowing a more materialised image, mirrors the act of imagining objects through observing the organic pastures of passing clouds. In its almost scattered-looking composition, this work is my take on a macro-perspective of the everyday.

BY THE KITCHEN SINK

In reaction to “Cloud Hunting”, it was only due to create another work that echoed my own personal imagery and micro-perception of the everyday. “By the Kitchen Sink” is literally a reflection of a domestic setting that I am exposed to frequently. Using a different methodological approach, the motif in this work is mostly outlined not by stitches but by the application of clean oil-painted strokes. Embroidery, being a very endearing method of mark-making is used to accent the presence of daily used objects, such as the two cups found in the composition.
