carpet: study of the staircase landing
(2016-2017) participatory・mixed media installation
The small staircase landings between adjacent houses of Waterloo centre are niche and small. The sense of claustrophobia is further enhanced through the clutter of front-door decors, which creates visual settings that narrate possible identities and territories owned by residents. Using this as a basis, Carpets: Study of the Staircase Landing is a site-specific, participatory work, situated outside the houses of certain Waterloo residents and engages with them to personally design their own carpets. By extending the perimeters of their homes through the placement of carpets (a common semiotic to cosy interiors) beyond front doors, the work seeks to examine the dynamics between neighbours and traversing individuals as they attempt to make sense of their ownership over the space whilst negotiate between the binary of comfort and intrusion.
シンガポールではほとんどの人はHDBという建物に住んでいます。ウオタルセンターは１９４６年ごろに建てられた古い典型的なHDB住宅です。それで、エレベーターが４階と１階にしか止まらず、他の階の人は階段を使わなければいけません。しかも、階段が狭くて、階段を降りると、すぐ住人の家の前に着く設計になっています。また、それぞれの家に個人的な雰囲気を作ろうと、住人たちはそれぞれの家の外に自分のものを並べています。そのため、狭い階段を降りる時、人はなんとなく違和感を感じて、音がしないように気をつけて、静かに降りていきます。階段は公共の場所なのに、個人のスペースが玄関から広がって、他の人がこの場所に入りにくいと感じることもあるそうです。
この作品で私はデザイナーとしてメーカーとしてウオタルセンターの住人たちとカーペットをデザインしたり、作ったりしました。自分の特徴があるカーペットを置くことによって、階段を使う人からどんな反応が得られるかを実験したいと思いました。また、この場所を通る人とこの階の住人たちとどんな新たな交流が生まれるかを楽しみにしました。
最後に、協力してくれた住人のそれぞれの玄関にカーペットを置いて人が気づかないように監視カメラを設置して、階段で起こった交流を録画しました。そして作品を展示している時、インスタレーションとして録画したビデオとカーペットの様子の写真を見せました。
