nagoriyuki

(2019) plain weave・cotton / wool 80 X 50 cm

Growing up in Singapore, I experienced summer all year round. After moving to Japan, I realised I did not possess much sensitivity to the seasons changing. To me it was all hot or cold or in between.
When autumn came, the people around me often comment on the air smelling like fall. But I never really knew what autumn smelt like. As such, my perception of time flowing throughout the year is not through the natural elemental changes, but rather how I spend specific periods with people.

「Rainwater」 (solar term)

When the sun reaches the celestial longitude of 330 degrees, the solar term of “Rain Water” arrives. “Rain Water” indicates that as the weather gets warmer, the amount of rainfall increases, at the same time the form of precipitation transforms from snowfall to rainfall.

On a cold February morning, Mayuho and I commuted to school together. It was the first time I saw snow melting into rain as it fell. As we walked with an umbrella over our heads, Mayuho started singing Nagoriyuki, a song I spent the entire of February playing on the guitar and singing at karaoke. I also remembered how rosy people’s cheeks were due to the cold.
