Cally Tanb.1998, Singapore 
Graduated with MFA in Textiles Design, Tama Art University

Cally's practice explores the representation of objecthood and potency in non-human matter. She believes that following these modes of being can inform alternative ways to navigate around personal scapes such as memory terrains or tangled emotions. Deeply inspired by experiences derived from object-making, specifically using textile materials and techniques, her works are often birthed from slow-accumulative fibres and echo both intimate and unfamiliar relationships between people and the everyday artefact.

キャリーは制作活動を通じて、オブジェの持つ特質やその中に宿る偉大な力を探求している。非人間的な存在の本質や、あり得る実存の形を「観る」という視点を通じて自らを内観すると、パーソナルの領域をより深く、鮮やかにナビゲートできると信じている。テキスタイル素材と技術を用いたオブジェ制作から得た経験に深くインスパイアされた彼女の作品は、ゆっくりと蓄積された繊維から生まれることが多く、人と日常のオブジェとの親密でありながらも新鮮な関係性を反映している。

	Being emptied out, therefore feeling no sense of purpose or proper functionality. Consequentially, this version of us becomes of no use in the eyes of them. To be stomped on, torn, washed away by the rain in subsequent days until previous forms peel away and submit to a perished fate. 

Perhaps, another opportunity to shoulder the heaviness yet once again, through the fumes and careless puffs. 


To reiterate tiresome repetitions of feelings our keepers are incapable of conjuring. 


To remain lovely; hopefully plateauing right above insignificance.

{the little boy inflates his float with the devil's smoke so that he may drift along the sad, tired river}


	空きになると、機能性がなくなり無価値の存在として見られてしまう。このバーションの私たちは、彼らの目には何の役にも立たなくなる。踏みつけられ、引き裂かれ、雨に降られ、元々の形が剥がれ落ち、滅びゆく運命を歩むしかない。煙や不注意な一服を通して、もう一度、彼らの重苦しさを背負う機会を得るのだろう。


うんざり、だるい感情を受け入れ、そいった気持ちの器としての使命を繰り返してみせる。

愛おしい存在であり続ける、

願わくば、取るに足らないものの真上で維持する。

	For loss to happen, the lost has to flee.Lighters for example, might not necessarily fall from our hands but rather slip away.


As if like sheep, venturing off for greener pastures, growing teeny tiny legs to wander off. 
Moving in herds, their grand migration colour the floors.
	「失くす」が起こるためには、「失くされた」物が自分でどこかへ行かなければならない。ライターという商品も、手から落ちるとは限らず、もしかして自分自身が逃げてゆくという説もある。


まるで羊のように、より広い牧草地を求め、小さな足で歩き出すのです。群れをなして移動し、その壮大な移動が床を彩る。

	Sore feet and weathered hands, clanking clay ware and running water.
Boss passes me a salad basket, wash it he says. 
O’ the dire mess of stubborn stems clinging to inflexible mesh. 
With desperation, the dread has to kept be at bay. 


Imagine, you canーyour blurred vision allows you to do so. 

The green of the salad basket, the wild energy of Ricola leaves,&#38;nbsp;purple and pink of unnamed vegetations, glistening water.


Before a meadow, that’s where this is.

Sprouting wildflowers that shimmer like beads. 

Touched by dew and cold breeze of morning air. 


Much more impressionable, savourable than oil from the cast iron pan. 


	足が痛くなり、指先の皺ができ、土器が鳴り、水が流れる。ボスは私にサラダバスケットを渡し、それを洗えと言う。頑固な茎が網にからみつき、悲惨な状態だ。心の中に抱いているめんどくささを抑えなければならない。


疲れでぼやけた視界を利用し、違う目の前の風景を想像してみよう。


サラダバスケットの緑、リコラの葉の野生のエネルギー、 名もなき草木の紫とピンク、輝く水面。

ここが草原だ。


ビーズのように煌めく野草が芽を出す。

露と朝の冷たい空気に触れる。


鋳物鍋の油よりずっと香ばしい印象。

It’s the year 2021, the corona virus pandemic has hit humanity and no one’s allowed to use the hand dryers in public toilets. This newly established rule is executed by sticking a piece of paper on the mouths of hand dryers, covering up the area where people once stuck their hands in. Almost as if taken as second nature, some toilet managers don’t even bother to put up words that indicate its forbidden usage. 


It all comes down to this: white piece of paper VS human strength. 


As if functioning as a peace treaty or a humble fort, the white piece of paper stirs people away from its course. The tension that derives from the fragility of paper and the human hand that can break it in one motion, is somehow anxiety-inducing yet exciting. Nevertheless, the paper stands victory, build upon deep-rooted semiotics and social logic. 


This contrast between materiality and actors at play, it doesn’t up too much but also is worthy of taking note.{EVEN A FEEBLE CASTLE CAN HOLD DOWN THE FORT}

2021年、コロナウイルスのパンデミックが人類を襲い、誰も公衆トイレのハンドドライヤーを使用できなくなった。この新しいルールは、ハンドドライヤーの口に紙を貼り付け、普段手を入れるところを封じることで実行される。場合によって、その紙が使用禁止を示す言葉すら表示しないこともある。


つまり、「白い紙」VS「人間の強さ」。


平和条約や砦のように、白い紙が人の心を揺さぶり、人間的な行動を左右する。紙のもろさ、それを一撃で破る人間の手から生まれる緊張感は、不安でありながらワクワクさせる。しかし、紙は根強い記号論と社会的論理のおかげで、対人間の勝負を勝利する。


紙の物質と周りの行為者の対比は、あまり多くを語る必要がないが、注目すべきものだろう。

	The boy who loves asphalt has a thing for archiving squiggly lines found on the pavements of urban landscapes.&#38;nbsp;He has a photo album specifically for it. 


Twinkle-eyed for the organic movement of black asphalt, he is in wonder of its existence, a result of colliding consequences: coincidentally damaged floors and the intentional repairing of them. 


At times, besides the asphalt, he notices the sprouting of wild flowers within the crevices of tiles. 


Laying beneath this packaged scenery that often gets over-looked, is hope.


A gratitude for having the eye to spot tiny miracles.

	アスファルトを愛する少年は、都市にある舗装で目撃したグニャグニャの黒いシェイプを記録することに夢中になっている。それの専用アルバムも持っている。


黒いアスファルトの有機的な動きが目線を引き寄せる。偶然でダメージされた地面とそれに意図的に修復する行為といった衝突した結果がこのアスファルトの誕生。


時には、アスファルトの隣に、タイルの隙間から野生の花が芽吹いていることに気づく。


見過ごされがちなこの風景の中には希望がある。

小さな奇跡を見出せる眼球への感謝。

	It’s a rainy day. 

The downpour is relentless. 

Here I am, in white pants running across unsheltered areas to reach the station. 

Entering the train, I find a seat. 

I am soaked, my thighs press against the material of my white pants. 

The fabric, in its wetness, reveals translucently, allowing the insides of my pockets to come into view. 


How strange, to see all the trash and little trinkets stuffed into them. 

They take on a different air, peering through this visual frame, which is simply the shape of pockets. 


There’s that elusive thing I was searching for the other day. 

A wrapper I had already forgotten from the day before. 


This cheeky display, what a funny discovery. 

In the middle of moist discomfort and dangerously bordering on underwear revealed,&#38;nbsp;I feel in awe of this not-so-transcending experience, it tickles me to experience these forgotten objects in such a manner.


	今日は雨の日だ。
土砂降りの雨は容赦ない。
白いパンツに履いている私は、屋根のない場所を走り渡り駅に到着する。

電車に乗り込み、座席を探す。

席に着き、太ももが白いズボンの生地に押し付けその生地が張る。


濡れた生地が半透明になり、ポケットの中身が見える。

中にはゴミや小物が詰まっていて、なんと不思議な感じだった。

ポケットの形という視覚的なフレームを覗くことで、違う空気を感じる。


先日、私が探していた、あのつかみどころのないものがある。

前日から忘れていた包み紙も。


このほほえましい見せ方が面白い発見につながった。

しっとりとした不快感と下着が見えてしまうかもしれないという危機感の中に、 

超越的でもない体験から感嘆の気持ちが湧き、忘れ去られたモノたちがこうやって視線に再び現れるのだ。

	Bachelard’s ‘Poetics of Space’ analyses the spontaneous construction of interiors through imagination, linking these architectures to the threshold of our subconscious realm.

Nostalgia overwhelms as I explore the rooms within my house, running my fingers along its furnitures. Simultaneously, something remains amiss.

The body is the temple of the Holy Spirit.The words uttered by my mother resembles this sensation.As I continue to dwell in this house, I am reminded that I am it’s resident. And in the span of my residence, the outline of my existence grows into a bold line.

	
バシュラールの「空間の詩学」によると 、人が想像する家の構造には詩的な意味があり 、思い浮かべた家はその人の無意識の構造に類似している。

家の中を歩き家具を触わると、懐かしいと同時に掴みどころがない空間のようにも感じる 母が言ってたいた「体が魂の神殿だ」という言葉は 、まさにこの感覚と近いかもしれない。


家という空間の中に居れば居るほど、住人としての自覚を身につける。そして 、私の存在の輪郭線がよりに明白になる。

	A particular sensation emerges from the gentle collision between skin surfaces. Resembling a signal transmission, it shoots forward through physical connection and reverberates into the deepest parts of our personal arenas. This reverberation might then take the form of happiness, disgust, tranquility, rage and maybe fear. Or perhaps it may transform into a mere coagulation of undecipherable emotions. 


The echoes of this sensation leave indelible scars that trigger the replay of certain memories within the depths of my mind. As I am faced by the magnitude of unreadable data, by-products of a jogging memory,&#38;nbsp; I find comfort in the repetition of mark-making through the stitching of crosses [X]. A simple needle and stitch becomes my tool of choice to reminisce. And in doing so, the original form of reality dissipates into vestiges.


In these moments, memories of kind intimacy that once laid in slumber, quietly resurface.


A father’s belly button ready to be cleaned with a cotton bud. 


A mother’s soft touch to her child’s forehead and its hypnotic rhythm. 


These feelings of familiarity, that compels me to bestow them form, consume me whole.
	人と人の皮膚が接触すると、言葉で表現できない感覚が誕生する。


物理的な繋がりから自分のプライベートの領域まで何かが響いてしまう。その響きは喜び、嫌気、安心、怒り、恐怖など、それとも複雑な情緒の塊として感じるかもしれない。とにかく、脳みその奥まで深く刻まれて、長い間でリープレーのように思い浮んでしょうがない。自分自身でも理解しきれないデータを消化するため、目に優しく小さいな「x」に向けて、繰り返しの行動から癒しを求める。単なるな糸と針で、記録が行う一方で思い出の輪郭線がぼやけていく。


そのうちに、過去に眠っていた記憶が静かに浮び出て、なんて穏やかな姿で現れた。それは父のおへそをきれいにする思い出であっても、それとも母の柔らかい撫で方のリズムであっても、とりあえず、形にするしかないほどの馴染みが私を飲み込んだ。
